History of Nobel Prize
According to Alfred Nobel’s 1895 will, his estate is to be used as a fund to award five prizes annually to individuals who have most benefited humanity over the past years. Until this year, there were only five fields for which prizes were instituted in his will: Physiology or Medicine, Physics, Chemistry, Literature and Peace.
In the legacy of Alfred Nobel, the sixth category – economic sciences – was not initially mentioned. It was created by the Bank of Sweden in 1968 as a memorial to Alfred Nobel and was first minted in 1969.
The Nobel Foundation was established when Alfred Nobel died to manage his estate and carry out the terms of his will. The prizes are to be awarded by three Swedish and one Norwegian institutions.
Nobel Prize 2024 Winner for Physiology or Medicine
On October 7, 2024, Victoria Ambrose and Gary Ruvkun were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. This award has been given to him for the discovery of microRNA and its role in post-transcriptional gene regulation. The winners are awarded a prize of 11 million and have been selected for the Nobel Prize by the Nobel Assembly of Sweden’s Karolinska Institutet Medical University.
